Quid est veritas? -Pontius Pilate
(Jn 18:38)

What is truth?

Picture
Everyone is looking for truth. One problem is that we think we can define truth for ourselves. "What's true for you may not be true for me." If this is true, why do we get so upset with others when another's "truth" collides with ours? We get upset because we may be wrong. We get upset because oftentimes another's truth contradicts the one in which we believe.

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except by me." (John 14:6)

Jesus is truth. His words are truth. He alone provides a way to the Father through repenting (turning) of our sin and placing our faith and trust in Him.

"I'm not opposed to Jesus. If He is the way to heaven for you, that's fine. There are other ways as well." Are there? Biblical Christianity is the only faith that says "you can't earn heaven." It says, "you are not good enough and never will be." (Rom 3:23) The Good News is that although we aren't, Jesus is!

Think about it in this way: once something is made imperfect, how can it be made perfect again? It can't! The Bible says that even when we try to make up for bad by doing good, we still fall short! (Is 64:6) God's way to salvation is very exclusive. It comes through His Holy Spirit drawing a sinner unto Himself, convicting them of their sin, and providing atonement through His Son. He does all the work! We bring only our sin and a heart ready to receive that which He alone has given to and for us. (See this article for more info.)

What about Jesus + other "truths"?

Biblical Truth

The Bible is our source of truth. It tells us who God is, where we came from, where we are going, and how to know God through His Son Jesus Christ.

The Bible says that God created everything with purpose and in perfection (Gen. 1&2). When He created the world and all living things, Each time God created something, the Bible says, "And God saw that it was good." Everything was good, orderly, and perfect.

But everything is not good, orderly, and perfect today...something happened to alter everything as we know it. Sin entered the world. When the first people disobeyed God, their sin and disobedience changed everything: from the way the first people saw each other, to the animals, plants, and surrounding environment. We now live in a world wrecked by sin.

The truth found in scripture is the only truth worth sharing since it contains life! Have you had a chance to read the Bible with a clean slate and open mind? I'd encourage you to learn about Christ and the claims that He makes by reading the Gospels. Also, take some time to learn how those in the first century responded to the gospel by reading the book of Acts.

Take some time to hear how others explored Biblical Christianity. Some biblical examples include multitudes who heard Stephen preach in Jerusalem, Saul (who would be know as Paul, the author of most of the New Testament), and a merchant woman named Lydia.

What Must I Do?

Pilate wasn't the only one asking good questions, even if his was dismissive in nature.  In Acts 16, Paul and Silas were in jail and the Lord sent an earthquake to loose them of their bonds and open the jail for them to leave. The jailer, supposing that they had escaped, was about to commit suicide when Paul called out to him, "do yourself no harm, for we are all here." When he was brought a light, he asked them, "sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

Saved from what or whom? Paul and Silas had no doubt been preaching the Good News of the gospel to both the prisoners and the jailers and heard that they were alienated from God due to their sin, and upon death there would be a day of judgement to which they would have to answer for their sins against God. Their punishment would be hell and separation from God.

Paul's response in verse 31 to the jailer, is the same one that applies to us today! "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved!"
